Preparations

This month is all about preparations. Meaning, the art of preparing, or discipline in preparing; readiness. For everytime I finish something, I find myself having to start all over again. And I am ready.

I like to think of myself as always being prepared. I try to make sure I have enough of whatever I need in case a disaster strikes. My husband makes fun of me because I have a pantry full of essentials; extra bottled water, coffee, flour, sugar, canned foods, soups, pastas, rices, and sauces. I also like to have extra fire logs on hand in case of power shortages and we have to use the fireplace. I have an electric stove, so I make sure the propane tank is full in case we need to cook on the BBQ grill. And those batteries, all sizes, you just never know when you’ll need them for flashlights, clocks, watches, etc. Make sure those phones and I-Pads are charged up. And keep those vehicles and gas cans full!

I’m getting prepared for the summer, too. Now that I have a fur baby, his needs have to be met. Things like dog food, water bowls, extra beds, chew toys, meds, exercise pen, treats, harness and leach, etc. It’s time to start planning those trips. I can’t wait. I’m so happy our little guy loves to go camping, too!

The next thing I’m trying to prepare for is a foot surgery. Not my idea of having fun, but a necessity. For instance, who would have thought the performing doctor’s office doesn’t supply crutches or leg scooters?! It would have been nice if they told me this before the last moment. Now I’m scrambling to find both of these necessities before the surgery in a few days. Alas, a girl can only prepare for so much.

One last thing for preparation this month is the Lenten Season. We prepare for the upcoming celebration of Easter by starting with Ash Wednesday. I looked forward to getting ashes, though Mother Nature had different plans for Utah this year by giving us a massive snow storm that day. We were all snowed in. The mountains got an enormous amount of snow, at least ten feet, and over two and a half feet got dumped on us. We were prepared though, and thank God, the snowblower worked. And it worked and worked, just like Tim did. After three days, we finally got enough snow cleared to get back to business.

See, the art of preparation is a skill, something you have to have patience for. I have to say I am a more patience person than my husband, which is good, at least one of us is. Together we make a great team. And if some kind of misfortune should come our way, I think we will be able to handle it.

So, that’s it for February. I hope you all are prepared for whatever looks you in the face. Until next time…

Stay safe out there and God bless.

New Year- New Memories

Instead of making “New Year’s Resolutions,” I’ve been recording memories. I can’t remember where I found this idea, but it’s been fun and rewarding. I started this two years ago and this is how it works.

In the last week of December, I take my next year’s calendar and print all fifty-two weeks in the year on stock paper. I use Avery template #8163 with the ten sheet 2” x 4” labels. I date each week starting with January 1st. Example: Jan. 1-7, next Jan. 7-14, etc. Also, depending on what dates start at the beginning of each week, you will start with Sunday and go through Saturday. Record your memory on Sundays, using the label from the week before.

This is for postitive memories only. At the end of each week, write down one good thing that happened or made you happy. Example: “We sold books at a book fair this week!” or, “We went on vacation to _____.”(fill in the blank) If nothing eventful happened, say something like, “The sunsets were beautiful this week.” or, “I’m happy and healthy!” You get the idea.

At the end of the year, (I do this on New Year’s Eve.) take all your note cards, pour yourself a glass of wine, cozy up to a warm fire (if your lucky to have a fireplace or just a place that gives you comfort) with your husband, wife, significant other, your dog, or just you, and read each card and reminisce about the awesome year you just had. You will be amazed at what you wrote and didn’t remember recording. I know I was.

Our first eventful memory this month was being invited to a “meet the author/illustrator” book fair at Excelsior Academy Literacy Night in Erda, Utah. This was right up our alley. The first night, winter reared its ugly head with a snow storm and we wondered if anyone would show up. To our surprise, we had a good turn out. The next night the stars were out and there was an even better turn out. We enjoyed meeting the parents and children that love to read. We donated some books for their raffle, and the joy and excitement on the kid’s faces that won a Skip Thomas book was the most rewarding feeling of all. It was heartwarming when they ran to our table for us to sign the copy just for them. One little girl told us how sorry she was for our loss, and really meant it, when she read our flyer of how the real Skip Thomas had passed away. Talk about a tear jerker. Kids are amazing.

Today it’s 7 degrees outside. It snowed last night and this morning it’s frostbite weather and sunny. Tuco and I are staying inside. As I look for Book Fairs and Markets to sell our books and artwork in the year ahead, my baby is sleeping under my desk dreaming.

As this month comes to an end, we wish you all a very happy, healthy, and prosperious New Year. Stay warm and safe where ever you are and as always…

Til next time, God bless.

Our Christmas Story

Christmas is a joyous time bringing hope, love, and light to the world by celebrating the birth of our Savior Jesus. Each year it seems like the first time anticipating the wonder and mystery of it all.

We start to decorate the house on December 1st, when our sights and energy run high. We hang lights along the eaves and put up a gigantic, green, sparkling light-up wreath over the second story window. The porch is my favorite, where Santa guards the front door and the railing is draped in garland with apples. The posts are wrapped with red ribbon to signify candy canes. There are a few more wreaths with colored lights, and my Christmas pillows adorn the love seat and rockers. This year we finally put my big light-up cow and rooster in the yard, along with a few white lit spiral trees.

Next, the inside gets festive. Red ribbons and big bows wrap the cupboards in the kitchen while sparkling lights turn on above. The mantel hosts more lights with snowmen and photos from the past (and present) of our fur babies on their first Christmas with us. Colorful tapestries hand from the doors and a multitude of nativities are throughout the house. Children’s Christmas books are also a big must as I decorate the rooms. The stair railing is entwined with pine greens and the “elves on a shelf” are nestled in the boughs. A fire in the fireplace, Christmas carols playing softly in the background, writing out cards to friends and family far away, and baking cranberry orange loaves; these are the peaceful times and traditions I enjoy.

The season can also be a little stressful, as we all know. Searching for the perfect gifts, anxiously waiting for the delivery trucks, only to have the “perfect gift” not be the one you ordered. Phones calls. Will the replacements be here in time for Christmas? Meal planning. Trips to the grocery store. Oh, crap! I forgot the ____. Back to the grocery store. Tuco’s first picture with Santa. What should he wear? Will he be a good boy in the store? Will he like Santa? How will he react around all the other dogs? Then there is finding a gift for the husband who has everything. He says he wants nothing, how tempting. I know what he needs and attempt to look in Walmart, Kohl’s, Tractor Supply, Sportsman’s Warehouse…..not finding what I am looking for. I’m ready to give up and honor his wishes of “nothing.” It’s two days before Christmas. Aha! A light bulb moment. Why didn’t I think of this before? CAL Ranch, of course! It was there all along.

Tuco and I wrap the presents. He’s such a good boy. And it’s a good thing he doesn’t know we’re wrapping Dad’s and his. This is his first Christmas and I want him to be surprised when he sees presents in his kennel. When we’re done, we go watch Rudolf the Red Nose Reindeer, The Star, and The Grinch. He just loves watching animation.

It’s the 23rd, the Friday before Christmas. There’s a knock on the door. It’s our neighbors from down the street. We invite them in for a gift exchange and a holiday drink. We do this every year with all our neighbors. Then another knock. This time from an old friend we haven’t seen in a while, just moving back to Utah. What a nice surprise! Another knock, more neighbors. What a wonderful time.

Christmas Eve we go to mass. It’s the children’s Christmas play and it’s always heartwarming. Husband says we have to stop on the way home for coffee creamer. (could have told me this yesterday.) So, we go to Walmart, which of course, is closed. Where to next? Ah, Maverik, they are always open. We get the French Vanilla Coffee Mate, along with some other delightful things. Coors, Cheetos Cheese Puffs, and Lays potato chips. Just what a healthy snack on Christmas eve should be.

We try to sleep in on Christmas morning. Our little angel always sleeps late. But, we hear rustling and snorting downstairs. So, down we go to see what’s going on. It’s Tuco! He’s awake and found his presents in his kennel. He’s so cute! He can’t wait to get in there and tear them apart.

Present after present is opened. He’s spoiled, our little one. And why not, he’s our son. Soon he tires and falls asleep. Now it’s our turn. We exchange our gifts to each other and relax with a cup of coffee. We both make our phone calls to family in distant places and wait for the turkey dinner that will feed us this afternoon. We are content. We are blessed. We are grateful. We are happy.

As the month comes to an end, I tell myself I’m not doing certain things again next year, just like I said last year and the year before. Like making the festive loaves; they are time consuming and costly, especially this year. Or, I’m not sending out Christmas cards; the stamps are getting too expensive. Or, I’m not going to put up so many decorations; we have too many. But, I know me. I will do all those things again. Though I may complain, it bring me happiness to share and stay in touch with family and friends. After all, that’s what Christmas is all about; sharing the love we receive from a tiny little babe in a manger so many years ago.

To you and yours, Merry Christmas!

Until next time, God bless.

Storytellers Make Good Writers

How can you tell a good writer from a bad writer? What makes one a good storyteller and the other, well, not? In my opinion, when I am engaged in reading a book, or an article, and I can’t wait to turn the page and don’t want the story to end, that’s a good writer to me. When words ebb and flow, like a good warm hug, you just don’t want them to let you go.

I have my favorite writers that I admire and just can’t wait to read what they have to say. They make me comfortable, like a good friend sharing secrets over a glass of wine. Some people are just good at it. They have a way with words that pull you in, as though they’re speaking just to you. Their life experiences sometime trigger a moment or memory from my own past. I’ll have a common connection, maybe a spark of hope revealed or a boost of self esteem.

I love reading memoirs. Those that can expose their raw emotions and struggles just tug on my heartstrings. I find it fascinating to hear about other people’s lives; how and where they grew up, the funny times and the sad times, their hopes and dreams, and what gave them strength to rise above adversary. One author that comes to mind is Jeannette Walls. Her memoirs are so funny, and yet sad, that you think, this is fiction, there’s no way anyone’s life could be this messed up. But, that’s the beauty in memoir, it’s your own unique story and no one else’s can compare. Read her books if you get a chance, she is an awesome storyteller. (The Glass Castle and Half Broke Horses, for starters.)

I think writing memoir has a way of making my own life seem more significant. Maybe my wild life in the past wasn’t so unusual. After all, it’s my own one of a kind, unique, no one else has lived what I lived life. How did I get to where I am today? How did I survive all those insecure, crazy, frightening, lonely years? That’s a story I want to tell one day, when I get my nerve up.

But now, it’s November and it is the thankful month. I’m thankful for the people who shaped my life; the good and the bad, for where there is forgiveness, there is wisdom. I’m thankful for my husband and my new puppy, Tuco, who just turned one! I’m thankful for my health, my home, family, and friends. I’m most thankful for God, and the privilege to live in the greatest country in the world, The United States of America.

Until next time, God bless and stay safe.

The Colorful Month

I think October is my favorite month of the year. I can still wear shorts during the day and put on a warm oversized sweatshirt in the evening. The sun is lower in the sky. The days are shorter. And the colors of the leaves just take my breath away. When the warm sun casts comforting shadows in the afternoon, my soul is at rest. It’s time to bake bread and simmer home made soup in the crock pot.

The last Farmer’s Market has ended. It was a good season. We got to meet some wonderful folks and their fur babies along the way. Even with a few cancellations this summer, it all worked out great. Now we are working on new things as the weather gets cooler and we find ourselves contained indoors. The shift in mood is good. It makes us realize just what we have to do to make things better; with our artwork and ourselves.

The Raise The Woof Canine Carnival happened the same day as our last market. Though we didn’t participate this year, we still got to see the costumes of many of the participants. We handed out doggie treats to those who stopped by our booth and got to take pictures of some really cute dogs.

Tuco, our new addition, went on his first camping trip with us the first weekend. We went on a short trip to get him used to traveling in the motor home. He did good. Deer Creek State Park was our destination of choice for him. There were lots of other canines camping with their humans. Though it was hard for him to really let loose and play with them, I think it was good to see others like him enjoying the mountains.

Our house is all decorated for Halloween this month. We love doing that every year. Tuco got his first peek of Frankenstein on the front porch and didn’t know what to think. He barked at him of course, and then thought, hmm, he’s not so scary after all. My baby is so cute.

It’s time now for chimney cleaning before the snow falls. And fitting in more golfing before it’s too cold. Ah, the change of weather and seasons.

I hope you all take advantage of this gorgeous time of year. Get outside to see the colors before they are gone. Have a fun and safe Halloween.

Until next time, God bless.

First Day of Fall

Summer is over and Fall is here. Though last night was a night of terror from ole’ Miss Summer. She was reluctant to leave us as she brought a terrific storm to us at 10 pm and lasting til midnight. I was honestly scared, thinking it was another earthquake like we had in March of 2020. Hearing the loud wind rush like a freight train and the rain pound our windows horizontally was frightening. It hit our house with such force. The thunder quaked and the house shook, as though an elephant stampede ran into us. The lightening crackled, the room and sky lit up, and I hid my head under the covers. All this went on and my husband slept through it all. Go figure. Summer, take your scorching heat and be gone. I love you, but if you can’t play nice, then I don’t want to see you again til next year. I welcome you Fall and all you have to give.

We only have a few more markets to go. I am looking forward to this weekend and then October. Also, we have a few more camping trips planned. The leaves are just starting to turn color and I can’t wait to be in the mountains to enjoy them.

September is back to school month for most kids. I find myself immersed in new books to read and new stories to write. Who says school is just for kids? My little love bug, Tuco, is in school to learn how to be a great dog one day. He is studying his generals right now. He’s conquered the “sit, stay and come” commands pretty well, as long as there is a treat in my hand and lots of praises that is. lol.

I have to brag a little bit about an accomplishment I achieved this month. I got my first “By Line” published in a magazine! Mary Jane’s Farm Magazine accepted my story about my grandmother and the Millstone, New Jersey Post Office. If you get a chance to read it, I would love to hear from you. The issue is the Oct/Nov 2022 issue and my story is on page 25. I know of a few places that carry it; Barnes and Noble Booksellers and Walmart have them. Just saying, I’m on cloud nine!

This will be a short one this time. I hope you are all doing well, staying safe, and enjoying life. Til next time, God bless.

New Challenges

It’s been a challenging month right from the start. A lot has taken place beginning with birthdays and parties, an anniversary, farmer’s markets, and an adoption. That’s right, I said an adoption!

As you know, Skip Thomas Adventures is all about promoting the well being of animals. Our voice is speaking up for those who can’t. We encourage rescues, and adoptions from shelters. And as we keep the spirit of Skip Thomas alive, we donate partial proceeds from our books to animal charities as well.

Back in April, we were taking care of a puppy while his humans were at work. At four months old, doggie-day-care for little Tuco was perfect for all of us. I got to enjoy a Pocket Bully for the first time. This breed is a cross between the American Bully and the Patterdale Terrier. We weren’t familiar with this breed, but fell in love quickly. He was curious, playful, and fun to have around. At the end of the day, he went back to his owners. We always said if anything were to happen where they couldn’t keep him, we would take him.

Today, Tuco is nine months old. Things did take a turn in the wrong direction for his humans. Though others wanted to take him, we were the first and only ones that had his best interests in mind. They wanted us to take him.

It’s heartbreaking to give up one you love so much. We were mixed with emotions as well, but we knew we could fill the tall order of being parents again for a puppy in need. He will always be able to see his first humans and their family anytime they want, that’s a gimme.

The challenges are many as we all adjust to a new way of life. One family without Tuco, and one with Tuco. It’s been seven years since we had our last rescue, Bear. It doesn’t seem like that long ago, as he’s always in our hearts along with Skip and Josh. Maybe Bear sent Tuco our way, just like Skip sent Bear our way. These are very real emotional feelings we believe in. Our animal spirits are always connected to us and we feel them around us daily. Tuco is our fourth rescue, and probably not our last.

So, as we get to know each other, the adjustments will become easier. Our time schedules are a bit different from what he’s used to. Our house and yard are different, of course. Our way of training will be a bit more, but we will all get used to each other and settle in shortly. We are extremely happy to welcome him into our home and give him all the love he deserves. One day, he will be an addition to the Skip Thomas Adventures!

Til next time, God bless and stay safe.

On The Road Again

I can not recall there ever being monsoon weather in Utah, especially in the northern part of the state. This June and July have been the hottest, humid and stormiest months so far. August’s Dogs Days of Summer seem to come earlier and earlier each year, and 2022 is no exception. We are breaking records with high heat and hurricane force winds. This is unacceptable. The only things positive from all the storms are the beautiful sunsets and the all the rainbows.

So, with this summer reaching record breaking temperatures in the triple digit numbers, we’ve had to re-think our schedule. We’ve only had one market weekend so far, not what we originally planned. Our June 18th weekend was canceled by the Farmer’s Market itself for safety reasons. And justifiably so, due to extremely high winds reaching 80 mph. Our next scheduled weekend was canceled by us due to extremely high temperature reaching 103 degrees. I apologize to all who may have showed up in search for Skip Thomas Adventures. We are praying the remainder of our weekends will be in compliance with our schedule.

The 4th of July was hot and very windy. Fireworks in most parts of Utah are banned, which I am happy about. Fires start so easily around here with the dry brush and lightening strikes, and just plain stupidity of human error. Our neighbors set off some fireworks in front of our houses, but we had the sprinklers on and hoses ready just in case.

The 24th is a state holiday here called Pioneer Days. It’s when the Mormons settled in Utah and this year marks the 175th anniversary. It’s a big celebration with rodeos, parades, fireworks, etc.. It’s really quite an event with tons of history to go around.

As I was restocking books in the motor home, I realized, we sell books on our outings! That “traveling billboard” on the back of the vehicle really works! We’ve met new Skip Thomas friends, human and canine, at each one of our getaways. Of course along with selling books, we get to enjoy the beautiful outdoor scenery, cooler temps and the sound of crickets chirping in the night. And sometimes, thunder. But best of all is making friends we know we will see again. So, on the road again, we are going to Mt. Pleasant this coming weekend to visit friends we met in May at Palisades State Park. What could be nicer than that?

So, as July comes to an end, we look forward to continuing our creative adventures and getting new material out to you, our fans, as soon as possible. Until then, enjoy your summer and stay safe.

God bless,

Skip’s mom, Cb

It's Summer!

School is out. The days are longer. The temperature is hot! It’s time for outdoor events and vacations. We look forward to getting away as much as everyone else.

June 4th started the market season for us at Daybreak Farmer’s Market in South Jordan. We enjoyed our first day and met so many wonderful folks and friendly canines.

June 18th was canceled due to extremely high winds and thunderstorms. Monsoon weather is unusual for us here in Utah, but this year is different. Not to worry though, we have more dates scheduled.

Trying to get a reservation to a state or national park is getting more and more difficult. Everyone has the same idea to get out and explore this beautiful state of ours. We did get lucky back in February to get this month’s trip planned.

We ventured to Millsite State Park. For us, it was a little over a three hour drive. The roads were good and easy to get to. Our park was situated in Emery County at the mouth of Ferron Canyon, just west of the town of Ferron.

We found the RV Park to be perfectly situated around the shore of the reservoir. It wasn’t very big, but that made it even more attractive. There were ten full-hookups. We were #10 on the far end. There were other campsites just north of us with partial-hookups along the bank of the water, too. The whole area was just beautiful, peaceful and quiet. Until the storms came in…

The day were arrived, it was a gorgeous sunny day, perfect in every way with a nice warm mountain temperature in the low 80’s. After camp was set up, we decided to just take in the view of the surrounding canyon and lake. The sunset was breathtaking. At night, the breeze was cool and refreshing. We woke in the middle of the night to rain drops falling on the roof. It was soothing and we had a restful night sleep.

The next morning came with a beautiful sunrise and some fishing off the dock. The sunny day wouldn’t last though. The afternoon brought dark skies and thunderstorms, along with strong winds. Our whole trip was like this; one minute sparkling and the next turbulent. We enjoyed every moment.

Keeping our eyes on the sky at all times, we got in some trail riding, fishing, campfires, and introducing Skip Thomas Adventures to new friends. We met all different breeds of dogs traveling with their humans and we had a wonderful time.

This time of year is also Cattle Drive season. The herders were moving their cattle up the canyon. We’d hear the “moos” of the cows, and the “whinny” of the horses driving the herd up the road. I tried to get as close as I could without interrupting the farmers. I just had to get pictures!

As this month comes to an end, we find ourselves grateful for what we have. We both have love for the great outdoors, seeking new adventures, and making new friends. We have love and respect for each other and a sense of purpose in sharing our dreams of Skip Thomas Adventures with others. And as much as we love getting away, we’re always happy to say, “There’s No Place Like Home.”

Enjoy your summer travels, meet new friends, and always stay safe.

Until next time, God bless.

“Making your way in the world today takes everything you’ve got. Taking a break from all your worries, sure would help a lot. Wouldn’t you like to get away?”

“Sometimes you want to go where everybody knows your name. And they’re always glad you came. You want to be where you can see our troubles are all the same. You want to be where everybody knows your name.” Cheers Theme Song - portion - by Gary Portnoy and Judy Hart Angelo

Like the lyrics say, sometimes you just need to regroup and re-assess your current situation. To see where you’ve been. To see where you’re heading. Is this what you really want? Now is the time to make changes before you get too far involved. Sometimes life moves too fast and we need to be surrounded by people who care, people who don’t judge you and let you be yourself. That’s the feeling of comfort and acceptance. It’s the feeling of belonging to something or someone familiar and relatable. And that was my reason for going back to New Jersey to visit my roots and family.

I’m on my way back to where I now call home, Utah. As I look out my airplane window, I’m listening to soothing piano music that calms my soul. If any of you know me, you know I’m a nervous wreck on a plane. After taking some Dramamine and a glass of wine, I can relax. But, just a little.

The evening sun is setting somewhere below the clouds, but above it is peaceful. I have a glimpse of heaven. My heart rate has slowed and I don’t want to lose this serenity I’ve found. I stare at the sun and don’t want it to end. I’m afraid to blink and have it all disappear. I’m caught in between time zones…

I know that when we land, my busy life will once again forge ahead and take over. But before the first summer market next weekend, we have things that need to be done. We have to make sure the tent is ready. And along with that, weights, tables, merchandise, banners, fully charged electronics, etc. I’m sure more will come to mind when we pack the vehicle next week.

So, I’m glad I had my little get away and got to rejuvenate because, yes, this is what I really want to do. Hope to see you at the opening of Daybreak Summer Market!

A Mix-Mash of Stuff

Ok, so I have a little bit of this and a little bit of that to share this month.

April started out with Palm Sunday, then Holy Thursday, Good Friday, Passover, Easter, and Orthodox Easter. I think I covered all the religious holidays for the month, but if I’ve missed any, feel free to correct me. This is one of the most beautiful and meaningful times of the year to me. My soul rejoices in the cleansing of all things spiritual and the rebirth of nature. My flower bulbs are alive and gorgeous after the long cold winter. They seem to be shouting, “We’re back!” and I am happy to see them.

The weather has been up and down, which is about right for the month, too. As the saying goes, “April Showers Bring May Flowers.” The grass is the greenest now and has already been cut twice. The rain comes and the rains goes, everything is fresh and clean.

I have been honored to give doggie-daycare to my neighbor’s pup. It came about quite unexpectedly, but I couldn’t be happier. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a canine in the house, and a puppy at that! Tuco is a four month old Pittie/Bully mix, and full of smarts and energy. I had forgotten just how much work goes into caring for a baby. I am teaching him commands and he is very receptive. I’m so proud of the little guy. It’s hard to give him back at the end of the day, you see, I’ve fallen in love…..

Our newest product is in production and we will have some to sell at the first market this season. We are pretty excited to show you our Skip Thomas coaster collection. The picture below is in the ruff stage, but they are quite handsome in the finished stage. Just a sneak peek for now.

Here is our Daybreak Farmer’s Market schedule for 2022.

Current Events

The Russian/Ukraine war has been dominating the news this month. Gas and food prices are on the rise. Ketanji Brown Jackson has been nominated for the U.S. Supreme Court. The two former devastating events and the latter historical event have made it hard to focus on creativity.

On the lighter side, our routines are getting more back to normal since the Covid-19 pandemic started in 2020. We got to attend three outdoor shows: The 2022 RV Show, The 2022 Off-Road Show, and The 2022 Sportsman’s Outdoor Expo.. And we’ve uncovered the motor home this month hoping the last of the big snowfalls are over. We are ready to get this spring party started!

Spring cleaning, inside and outside, is taking a front row seat on our priority list. Washing away the winter grime on the windows and re-installing the screens makes the view of my world a brighter place. Crocuses, tulips, and daffodils are rearing their colorful faces and now the flower beds need to be turned over. The last of the snow has melted and temps are rising. Broken tree limbs and dead leaves left over from the winter have been trimmed and picked up. The mower took a quick spin through the yard to pick up anything else left behind. Green grass, we’re ready for you. March really did come in like a lion, and is now going out like a baby lamb. Bring on the warm weather!

We are still working on new things for the market this summer. It looks like we did get the weekends we picked. Once Daybreak gets their vendor information together, I will post the dates.

In the meantime, we needed to get outside and take a Razor ride across the street and into the mountains for some enjoyment. We are so blessed to live where we do and never take it granted.

Until next time, get outside and enjoy your spring!

God Bless and be happy.

Purpose & Waiting

Have you ever wondered what your purpose in life is? What it is you’re supposed to be doing? Why am I where I am today and how did I get here? For most of my life, I didn’t know the answers to these questions. But now, I think I do…

This is our slow time of the year, in more ways than one. The calendar says it’s winter, but my front porch says it’s spring. There’s no snow on the ground and temps are in the low 50’s. We’ve come to realize this is not a good sign. If it’s this warm in winter, the summer will show up sooner and be a scorcher.

So, while I am waiting to schedule the summer markets, I am painting some new pictures, getting ideas for the next book, and planning our travel trips. We will have some new items to sell with the books this year and when they become available I will reveal them to you.

Also in this time of in between, I find myself prioritizing, organizing, and socializing; all the while being safe of course. I am rekindling friendships, reminiscing of days gone by and seeing how much I’ve grown. Some things that mattered to me just don’t seem so important anymore. Though the memories make me smile, I wonder sometimes, “What was I thinking?” It’s nice to look back, but it’s forward that we need to focus on. Planning the next day, week, month, or year is the goal to keeping dreams alive.

My husband bought me a book for Valentine’s Day called “The Way Of Integrity” by Martha Beck. This is perfect timing for me as I am looking for that purpose of wholeness. Not that I’m unhappy, but looking for the answers of those questions I asked myself above. The more I dug deep into my soul, I found my purpose. By being a positive influence in someone’s life, I encourage young people to follow their dreams and share their talent with the world. There is only one you, and no one else in this world is like you. That is what makes us all so unique and different. By embracing our differences, we must reach out, be strong, and courageous. Let no one tell you it’s impossible to achieve your dreams. And most important, never give up. As for me, my purpose is to tell stories…

As I was finishing up here, I found out the world lost another WWII American Hero. Colonel Gail Seymour Halvorsen, also known as “Uncle Wiggly Wings” or “The Candy Bomber.” In 1948 he was a cargo pilot flying supplies into Soviet-blockaded Berlin. Upon noticing the German children gathered by the fences of the Tempelhof Air Base, he saw they had very little. He first offered them chewing gum and later decided to give them something more. He made small parachutes from handkerchiefs filled with candy and dropped them from his plane on Christmas Eve. His small act of kindness gave hope not only to German children in a bombed-out city, but to all who hoped for freedom. To know the full story, check out the children’s book “Christmas From Heaven, The True Story Of The Berlin Candy Bomber” as read by Tom Brokaw. Colonel Halvorsen passed away February 16, 2022 at the age of 101.

Until next time, God bless

Oh, no! It’s too early! You are pretty though…

Happy 2022!

Here we go again, another new year, out with the old and in with the new. For me, January is a time to reflect on the past year. What did we do right? What did we do wrong? And how can we make 2022 a better year. As I look back on blogs and the travel diary I wrote, I see we can make adjustments and seek new things to do and find places to go. All in all, we did pretty good. It was a good year.

One thing I am pleased and blessed with is our good health. Both my Sweetie and I are diligent in trying to eat healthy, exercise, and practice social distancing when necessary. At times it’s hard, because we want to see our friends and make new memories. And at the same time, is it worth the risk getting together with a crowd of people and getting Covid just to have a few hours of merriment? I think not. Until this pandemic subsides, we will stay home. We got our booster vaccines and stay in touch with family and friends over the phone or social media right now. When we do go out, we’re very selective and still wear our masks.

So, what is in store for us this year? Well, we are starting a new book! Book four in the Skip Thomas Adventures series will be one everybody can relate to. Right now, it’s a work in progress and as it gets to fruition, I will fill you in on the details. We are being very creative and you will have to follow us to find out more…;)

This year we want to get away more. We are looking for places to relax, rejuvenate, and enjoy the outdoors. We have a few trips planned with the motor home already. I don’t know where you live, but here you have to make RV reservations in the State Parks months in advance. And if you’re lucky enough, get the month, week, and days you want! Now days, everyone is jockeying for a place to reprieve and escape the pandemic.

This month is also a time for us to think about what weekends we want to do Farmers Markets. We were very happy where we were last summer and plan on scheduling there again.

January can be a stressful month, for me anyway. Not because it’s gloomy, cold and snowy, but because it’s tax season again. Yuck! Throughout the past year, I wondered if keeping all those receipts, miles, and notes of everything business was worth doing. But in the end, yes, it was. It just gives me a headache. Filing quarterly helps a lot, though I don’t find it enjoyable. Oh well, c’est la vie.

Until next time,

God bless, stay positive, stay connected, and stay safe.

Thoughts for the creative mind.

Yikes!

Why we stay inside and be creative!

That says everything.

Staying busy in the cold month.

Joyful!

Anticipating, questioning, planning, and waiting. These are verbs that describe the month of December this year. Along with colder temperatures and unexpected winds and snow, it is now winter.

We anticipated the arrival of the new book way back in September. We cleaned out the Tough Shed and made space for our new edition in the literary world. Our baby needed shelter from the elements and would share housing with book #1 and book #2.

We questioned whether our Christmas book would arrive in time for the holidays. Printing was behind thirteen weeks and we were four weeks behind on our end.

We planned our holiday markets. With only so many days to schedule for, we set up dates and times that we thought would work best for us. We designed our displays and made our presentations bright and colorful to attract customers.

Then we waited. We were told shipping would be after Thanksgiving now instead of before. So, if we were lucky, our books would arrive the second week of December. We told ourselves, it is what it is and whatever happens, happens. If we had to cancel some dates we had planned, so be it.

When Signature Book Printing in Maryland called and said the shipment was ahead of schedule, we were elated! Books would be to us in four days! The champagne got chilled and we waited for the call to schedule delivery from XPO Logistics. The weather is so unpredictable here in Utah, all we could do was pray for the best conditions. The books got delivered Thursday December 2 at 4:30pm with clear sunny skies and no snow anywhere, cold, but no snow.

That Saturday the 4th, we took our new baby to places that already carried it’s older siblings and they were delighted to have this new edition in their stores. It was a joyful time for us. Christmas was just around the corner and things were falling into place. We didn’t have to cancel any of our scheduled markets.

The book launch at Varex Imaging on the 7th was a great success. They put up advertising inside the company on big screens letting people know when we were coming. I was really impressed that they would do that for Tim. He has a lot of great support there. We were so appreciative to them for allowing us to be there during work hours and letting Tim have the day off to do it. Everyone was happy and excited to come by and get their books signed. I enjoyed meeting all his co-workers and friends.

The Winter Market at Daybreak went ahead without a hitch both days, the 10th and 11th. Still no snow yet, just sub-degree temperatures. We got to see Santa and had a great time there.

Our online orders started to come in. Everything was more than we could have anticipated. I was up bright and very early for a full week, everyday mailing books so everyone could have them in time for Christmas. Was it exhausting? Oh, yeah. Was it rewarding? You betcha!

We finally got the bad weather and winter officially arrived on the 21st. Our first snow storm brought fifteen inches of snow! I baked my annual orange-cranberry holiday bread for the neighbors. Then Tim and I donned our NFL Santa hats, Tim’s Green Bay Packers and my New England Patriots Superbowl Champs, and sprinkled joy in the neighborhood.

With things under wraps, it’s now time to sit back and relax; Time to reflect on what Christmas is really all about, the birth of our Savoir Jesus. From our house to yours, we wish you a very Merry Christmas. We wish you good health, safe travels, and making happy memories with your loved ones.

Until next time,

God bless!

Grateful

This will be a short version this month, as it’s almost Thanksgiving.

We’ve been blessed with good weather this month. The leaves have fallen from the trees and our willow got the trim it so desperately needed. Temperatures have been warm enough for us to rake and bag all the leaves, and that in itself was a blessing. We winterized and covered the motor home, and got the RZR trailer covered as well. Those tasks are finished and checked off the to-do list. The sun is still shining and for that I am grateful.

We got great news this morning. Our books have been shipped and are expected to arrive in Salt Lake City next Tuesday! Yay! We’re so excited to see them! We don’t have a book launch scheduled, so if anyone is interested in purchasing, please check the website or message me, and we will do everything in our power to get them to you for Christmas.

We have a few markets set up in December, one of which is the Daybreak Winter Market. The hours are Friday, December 10, 2021 from 4 pm - 7 pm. Also Saturday, December 11, 2021 from 9 am - 2 pm. We will have an awesome display at the Daybreak Community Center, 4544 W. Harvest Moon Dr. in South Jordan, UT 84009. Come by and shop with us! Santa and Mrs. Claus will be there, too, on Saturday from 10 am - 2 pm.

Alpha Graphics in West Valley City, UT is working on our bookmarks and posters for the Christmas book. We are excited to get them and show them off.

We are getting our Christmas market display put together. Decor from Hobby Lobby gave us everything we needed for a beautiful setup. We are ready!

I am still working on some children’s paintings to help with gift buying and decorating. I get enormous enjoyment in making these and seeing the reactions I get. I hope you like them, too.

Here are just a few things I love about November:

Daylight Savings Time ended.

The crunch of leaves under foot while going for a walk.

Sipping a cup of hot tea while reading a book wrapped up in a blanket.

The crisp days and cold nights. Putting an extra comforter on the bed and snuggling up.

Football!

The clear blue skies and the soft afternoon glow of sun at 4 pm.

And last but not least, THANKSGIVING and all that entails!

So in closing this month, I wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving enjoyed with those you love. Until next time, be grateful for everything in your life.

God Bless

Best Friends Animal Sanctuary

We finally got to take the trip we had been waiting for. The fall temperatures and the spectacular colors in the canyon were well worth the postponement of the June trip first planned. Best Friends Animal Sanctuary in Kanab, Utah was more then we could ever have imagined and it didn’t disappoint.

The morning we left it rained. But, we didn’t mind, in fact for the first four hours of the road trip it rained. We were on a mission to deliver books to Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. In the final hour, the sun was shining and the red rock canyon walls and the foliage along the Virgin River were a blaze with colors I can’t even name. It was breathtaking.

We were giddy with excitement and had our eyes peeled for the big orange sign to welcome us to our home for the next four days. And there it was, in all it’s glory. We made our way to the Welcome Center to check in. We stayed in one of their cabins, which was more of a studio apartment, but was just perfect. Since we didn’t have any tours the first day, we took our own tour on Angel Canyon Road.

We stopped at Angels Landing, where they do memorial services each month. This isn’t the resting place, that came a ways up the road. Angels Rest is where the animals crossed the Rainbow Bridge to their final resting place. This was so emotional for us. There were thousands of angels there. This is the area where your can have your pets buried. The mega wind chimes are all tuned to the same tone and are unbelievable. The eerie solitude you experience on this hollowed ground brought tears to our eyes. We felt the animal spirits there. The other resting place is at the Gratitude Garden and Angels Overlook on top of the canyon. Another emotional tribute to the animals that never got adopted and passed away at the sanctuary. Also, some of the founders and workers are resting there as well. There are stone benches all throughout the garden to sit and meditate. This is a very touching and peaceful place with gorgeous views of the canyon in every direction.

The next day we went into the town of Kanab to visit the Best Friends Roadhouse & Mercantile. That’s where we met with Mike, who gave us a warm welcome and took our books. The Mercantile is a gift shop/coffee shop and has a visitor center upon entrance. It was very inviting and full of colorful merchandise, which we definitely made ourselves available to. You’ve got to stop there for a visit and get some gifts for yourself and your animal loving friends. It’s really a fun place. The Roadhouse is the hotel where you can have pets stay with you while visiting. These rooms are really nice, too.

Our first tour was Old Dogtown Behind The Scenes. Our tour guide was John and he was great. The grounds are very clean and the dog runs are very spacious. Every dog has his/her own area outside for fresh air and exercising, as well as indoor shelter to sleep. John knows every animal’s name and personality. And there’s over 200 dogs that live there! There’s a senior area, a puppy area, an aquatic physical therapy & rehabilitation area, grooming area, and just about anything a traumatized animal coming to the sanctuary needs to help heal and get better. Most are adoptable, some need more rehab time.

Our second tour was Wild Friends at Feathered Friends. These are the birds you see in nature. There weren’t a lot of them there, which is really pretty nice. That means they are living happy and healthy in their natural habitat. We did see some ravens, crows, chickens and owls.

Our third tour was the Parrot Garden. There were quite a few birds there. We got to see Cockatoos, Cockatiels, different kinds of Parrots and other birds. Most are up for adoption and are carefully paired with a human, as we were told not all birds like certain people! So, before they go to their forever home, they are carefully matched with a compatible person.

The fourth and final tour was the Grand Sanctuary Driving Tour. Our tour quide, Deb, was astounding! She took us everywhere and gave us an amazing history lesson of the place. We stopped at Cat World which was very impressive. The cat houses were very clean and spacious, just like Dogtown. Each animal had it’s own play and sleep area, as well as trauma centers for rehab and healing. This tour was two hours and was just beautiful. If you have the chance, get this tour and ask for Deb. It’s truly worth the time.

There are up to 1,600 animals that call Best Friends their home-between-homes. Dogs, cats, bunnies, birds, horses, pigs, and other barnyard animals come here from all over the country, seeking a safe haven where they can find refuge, love, and acceptance. I am already planning my next visit so I can tour other areas that we didn’t have the time for; the horses, pigs, and ruins.

I know this was kind of long, but I hope you enjoyed our trip with us. There was so much we did, but I don’t have enough space to tell you all and show you all. (Check Skip Thomas Adventures Facebook for more photos.) So, if you go to Kanab, try to visit Best Friends, especially in the fall when the weather is cold in the mornings and just perfect in the afternoon, and the fall colors are spectacular! We left with a feeling of purpose and belonging, and can’t wait to come back again.

Til next time, God bless.

Busy-Busy-Busy!

I don’t know where to start; we’ve been so busy this month. I have a lot to share, so I’ll just dive right on in.

Skip Thomas Adventures is finally ready to hit the road with a traveling billboard. The wrap was completed the first weekend of September. It was such an interesting process. We got to be there and see it from beginning to end. The installation was nothing like what we expected. Seeing our design on vinyl and at that magnitude was truly amazing. We want to give Doug Layton at TRON AUTO LAB a big thank you for doing a great job.

The second weekend was a Daybreak Farmers Market event. We had thunderstorms, torrential downpours, and sunshine that day. That’s Utah weather for you, so unpredictable this time of year. We were so thankful when the sun came out. It was a very special 9/11 celebration with taps being played and a release of butterflies in remembrance of all the fallen heroes that day. It was a very touching ceremony.

On September 15th, our publisher uploaded the Christmas book files to us for approval. This was such an exciting time for us. Once we go over everything with a fine toothed comb, so to speak, and make any corrections we want, then it goes to the printer. The next step was just that. It was sent on to our printer. They in turn sent us a final proof and on our approval again, they start the printing. I proof read that copy over and over again to make sure it was exactly the way we wanted it. It’s quite nerve racking to tell you the truth. I don’t want any mistakes because it all falls on us if anything gets printed wrong, not them. Tuesday September 21st, our book went into production. Our part in this long process is done and now we wait. It’s in the hands of Signature Book Printing. We expect shipment sometime near Thanksgiving.

The third weekend was another Daybreak Farmers Market. It was a nasty drive all the way there with thunder, lightening and downpours. We waited as long as we could to see if it would clear up, or at least stop raining, but it never did. So, with heavy hearts, we cancelled our day there. We didn’t want to, but books don’t do well when wet!

The last weekend was the final market of the summer. It was very busy with lots of people. We had a great day and met so many new friends. It always makes us feel good when a child runs by pointing a finger and says,” I have that book!” It’s a bit sad when things come to an end, but fall and winter markets now take over.

So, as we close this month on a good note, and a little exhausted, we look forward to our next projects. We hope you keep following us on our adventures. Life is good.

Until next time, God bless and stay safe.

An Exciting Time

So, the “Dawg Days of Summer” are still with us, along with the heat, fires, smokey skies, and flooding. Will it ever get back to normal? (whatever that may be…) We are still hoping for the best.

This month has been a good one for us. We just signed our third book contract with Surrogate Press. Yea! Now it’s a waiting game. It’s time for the publisher to get the layout and legal stuff filed. Then, it’s off to the printer for ten-twelve weeks. I know, it sounds like an awful long time, but hey, all good things come to those who wait.

We’ve had some really great weekends at the Daybreak Farmers Market. Selling our books and other items has been fun. It’s always nice to meet new people and see what other vendors are all about. There is a lot of awesome talent out there. We are so happy to be a part of the vendor community and share our story. Our next dates will be August 28, September 11, 18, and 25. Come by our booth and say, “hello.” We will be in booth #B 14. We would love to meet you.

August is our time to shine. Our birthdays and anniversary are other days we celebrated. We just had our twenty year wedding anniversary. Where does the time go? It seemed like yesterday we had a luau in the backyard. And birthdays, we’re still young at heart. As my ninety year old Aunt told me, the way to stay young is to stay busy. Well, we definitely are doing that!

We hope you are all staying safe and enjoying the rest of summer before the kids go back to school. As for us, we will continue to write and illustrate our stories for you.

Til next time, God bless.

Back In The Saddle

This newsletter is a bit late, but we’ve been pretty busy. Our weeks have started at the market, we’re closer and closer to finishing the next book, and we have two new places to tell you about that carry our books now. Yes, we are back in the saddle again after a very long time off in 2020.

We took a short trip to the High Uinta Mountains to escape the heat. Taking the Mirror Lake Hwy to the very top, elevation 10,000 feet, really felt good. We left 106 degrees and welcomed the cool night air of 40 degrees. Jackets, long pants, and the furnace even kicked on in the motor home at night! Hard to believe the drastic change just two hours east of Salt Lake City. We had an amazing campsite off the highway. All the campgrounds were full, but we found the perfect quiet spot with a beautiful meadow with moose.

Along the Mirror Lake Hwy is a small, but awesome smoke shop. Not a “vape” smoke shop, but a smoked fish/salmon smoke shop. This country general store has the best smoked salmon, such a delicacy on crackers and enjoyed with a bottle of wine…..I’m getting lost in my thoughts here…..but seriously, they have maps, food, drinks, postcards, sweatshirts and tee shirts, mugs, books, etc. And now they even have our books! They carry other local author’s books as well and I am so happy to be a part of them. This is where I found my publisher three years ago. I bought some of her books here. So, when you’re heading up Hwy 150 in Kamas, Utah, stop at the Samak Smoke House. The people are friendly and the scenery beautiful.

Our first farmers markets this year were the 4th of July weekend and the 24th of July, which is a Utah State holiday called Pioneer Day or also known as Days of 47. We were at the Daybreak Farmers Market in South Jordan. We really like this place. It’s not too far of a drive for us, about 30 minutes, and the people are diverse and friendly.

We were across from another book seller and I have to say I was a bit apprehensive at first. But after checking it out, because I’m such a big book fan, I fell in love with the place. By the end of the day, I was so happy and grateful to Forgotten Pages Book Mobile for carrying our books! Rebecca, the owner, is charming and though we had just met, I felt as though we were old friends. You’ve got to visit this bookmobile if you ever come across it. There are books for kids of all ages. (even this one!) It will be at Daybreak Farmers Market throughout the summer.

So there you have it. The hot month of July. We here in northern Utah are in a big drought season with lots of wild fires going on. We get surrounding state’s smoke from their fires, too. With nightly thunder storms it makes it very humid, unlike Utah weather. In the southern part of our state, they are getting floods! Climate change, it’s real. So stay safe, keep pets and children out of the heat and hot cars, and as Smokey the Bear says, “Only you can prevent forest fires!”

Til next time, God bless my friends.
