October! Wow, what a busy month it’s been. The Farmers Markets are over and our last hurrah for the month was our book launch. SKIP THOMAS’ FIRST HALLOWEEN was a huge success.

We had been anticipating Oct. 26th all summer long: from finishing illustrations, editing the story, sending it off to the publisher and finally off to the printer. Whew! What a journey.

The books got delivered Oct. 1st and from then on planning the party took top priority. This year the Oquirrh Mill Convention Center in Stansbury Park was our pick for the launch. Along the banks of the Mill Pond, it was the perfect place.

We set up the event the night before. Our help was amazing and we couldn’t have done it without them. A big THANK YOU to the Jolleys, the Christensens, and Jim Lindsley for letting us use your trucks and brawn to move everything and set up beautiful displays.

Our entertainer, Rob Harrington, was awesome! Everyone enjoyed his music and he made our event even more spectacular. Thank you so much Rob!

With the summer and fall markets over, we are taking some time to re-charge our minds and bodies. It will be nice to sleep past 5 am on the weekends and enjoy a hot cup of Joe and a home cooked breakfast.

Daylight savings time is just around the corner, and we all know what that brings. So, until then, let’s enjoy the falling leaves, amber sunsets, and the warm days and cool nights. Have a safe and fun Halloween. It was one of Skip Thomas’ favorite holidays!

Coming Into Fall

It’s the end of September. Where did the summer go? We were so busy with our Farmer’s Markets I almost forgot to write you our story….almost.

First, the most exciting news. Our second book has just been shipped and will arrive in Salt Lake City in one week! I can’t wait to see it! It gives me goosies just thinking about it! At the end of this blog, I will post the information for the book launch in October.

We have four more markets to do this season. They have been a lot of work, but also a lot of fun. This is how our summer went. Pack up the 4-Runner the night before so we’re ready to head out in the early, and sometimes dark, morning. First stop, McDonald’s for breakfast. Drive 30 minutes to the market of the day, be it a Saturday or a Sunday. Arrive at our destination and unpack everything: the tent, the weights, the chairs, the banners, the books, the cooler, the fans, the hardware, the I PAD, the phone, the drink cups, the bookmarks, the business cards, the shopping bags….let me see, did I forget anything? Oh yeah, the table and tablecloth! See why we pack up the night before? The best part is our time spent together and meeting new friends. It’s Witch Fest at Gardner Village all October. We will be there the first three weekends with the new book. Be the first to get yours!

So here it is, the beginning of Fall. It’s my favorite time of the year. Being an artist I can truly appreciate the kaleidoscope of colors on the mountainsides. God’s palette. A true gift to the senses and tranquility to my soul. I love the smell of leaves, raking them into piles, and crunching them under my feet. I love pumpkins! Lots and lots of pumpkins! They make me happy. I love baking apple pies, breads, and soups in the fall. I love the smell of burning wood in the fire pit and sipping warm eggnog with brandy.

The cooler weather and shorter days are a welcome to me. I hope you find the time to start slowing things down and really take in the colors of nature and the smells of Autumn. Do what makes you happy.

Gardner Village decor. This really soothes my soul, I’m originally from the farm lands in New Jersey and this takes me back.

STANSBURY DAYS 2019

Every third weekend in August is Stansbury Days; the summer weekend that unites our community with fun filled events and meeting new friends. We live in a beautiful area that harbors a lake, tennis courts, a swimming pool, golf course, clubhouse, ballparks, and an observatory.

The weekend began Friday night with a bike race for the little ones. An outdoor movie, A Bug’s Life, followed later on the clubhouse lawn. Saturday morning started early with a mini triathlon: a 500 meter swim in the lake, a 12 mile bike ride, followed by a 3.1 mile run through a designated route in the neighborhood. Here’s where I get to brag about my gal-pal and neighbor for winning fifth place overall and first place in her age group. Congrats Dr. V, so proud of you! A parade followed with proud participants.

The afternoon showcased a cardboard boat race for ages 5-12, also 13 +, and paddle board races; the former brought a lot of attention and excitement. The rules were only homemade boats made out of cardboard and duck tape. Lots of cheering went on for the ones that didn’t sink and made it back to shore in one piece. I have to say, that has always been my favorite event. The kids came up with some pretty unique designs, with a little help I’m sure from a parent.

The Activity Zone consisted of bounce houses, a dunk booth, mini-putt-putt, Nerf wars, and ATV train rides. What’s not to like about this weekend?

Across the bridge on the other side of the lake was where the vendors, including us, the food trucks and the car show presented themselves. There was also live entertainment throughout the day. The day ended with a brilliant display of fireworks over the water, followed by a star party at the Stansbury Park Observatory.

This was not our first time enjoying the neighborhood party, though it was our first time here promoting the SKIP THOMAS ADVENTURES booth. I am blessed and thankful to call this beautiful community my home. Stansbury Days is always the highlight of my summer and I can’t wait til next year to enjoy it again. Hope to see you all there.

GARDNER VILLAGE FARMERS MARKET

There’s only one word to describe the month of July and it’s HOT! Throw in a few thunder storms and you’ve got not only hot, but HUMID! That’s unheard of here in our desert state of Utah, but occasionally it happens.

This was our first FARMERS MARKET at GARDNER VILLAGE. It was overcast and rain threatened when we arrived. After setting up, the sky released a nice summer shower and cooled down the morning before the event started. Jenna, the Market Director, came over with a warm smile and welcomed us. We instantly felt at home.

This quaint little village has an assortment of unique shops and restaurants for kids and adults. It hosts different whimsical themed events throughout the seasons. It also dresses and decorates accordingly. Right now it’s the FARMERS MARKET every SATURDAY from 9 AM to 2 PM, JULY through OCTOBER. There was fresh regional produce, assortments of home made canned goods, and bakery goods. There were other culinary delights, food trucks, coffee vendors, home made items, a petting zoo, and horse rides, too. Some of the animals were rescues, which made our hearts go out to them even more. There was even live entertainment from an amazing singer named Desiree.

The other vendors were warm, friendly, and helpful. We met some wonderful people. One that stood out was a thirteen year old girl named Helen. We helped her get her tent up and she opened shop right next to us. Some remembered her from a few years back when she was just a little girl. She makes her own product and has new ideas for future products. Her booth wasn’t the flashiest. Her table was small, but organized and colorful. Her decorations were all her own. This young entrepreneur sold out of product before the event was over! It just goes to show, it doesn’t matter how old or experienced one is. It takes getting out there, believing in yourself and your product, and learning as much as you can. She does this all on her own and has a wonderful mom who supports her dream. I believe this girl will go far in life.

We had fun and can’t wait to come back again soon. Our next dates are August 31, September 7, September 21, September 28, October 5, October 12, and October 19. Hope to see you there!

FARMERS MARKETS

It’s finally summer and things have really picked up. All that planning at the end of winter is paying off. The FARMERS MARKETS have started and we are learning a lot. This is our first season experiencing the inside of a tent.

We had practiced setting up and taking down our tent, as we knew time would be of the essence before the event started. We had the TACOMA loaded up the night before and were ready for the early morning departure.

We arrived a little early at the WHEELER HISTORIC FARM, not knowing the routine or where exactly we would be. A few others were there unloading as we pulled in. We met a friendly couple who helped us and, as it turned out, we were right next to them! We were quite happy with our location. After setting up, and if I don’t say so myself, I thought our booth was very colorful, attractive, and inviting. We even set out a bowl of water for any dogs that came by to visit.

We took a stroll through the grounds to see what other vendors were there. We found the food vendors setting up and got lattes from one of the coffee trucks. Heading back to our booth, we settled in and waited for the event to start.

The first hour was slow. And so was the second. As we watched the booths making sales next to us, we wondered if we really belonged there. I’m not going to lie, it was a bit scary. After all, nobody knew who we were or what we were all about. We did a lot of people watching. We watched the children playing in the playground nearby. We saw an endless parade of dogs march by. It was as though we were in a small movie theater watching a movie. And then it happened, we got our first sale. And then another. And another. Dog lovers. Book lovers. It was great.

We met great people. Our book got out. We were asked if we would be back. And the most awesome thing that happened was, we were invited to a speaking engagement for companion animals in the fall! I’d say we had a pretty amazing day. And it felt good.

FARM FEST AT WHEELER HISTORIC FARM

The weather was iffy. Would it be rain or would the sun shine? We didn’t know, but we were going to the FARM FEST no matter what….

Throughout the week, we practiced loading the Tacoma, even took out the tool box in the back to make sure everything would fit. We arranged the tent, chairs, boxes, weights, banners, etc.. The day before, we had everything packed up, covered and tied down. We were ready to go.

At the last minute, we got the word. They didn’t want to take any chances with the weather and we would be inside the ACTIVITY BARN. “Yay!” we said. So, outside we went and unpacked the Tacoma. We undid the tie downs and tarp. Out came the tent, the weights, and the banners. We re-packed, this time in the 4-Runner and everything would stay dry.

The morning came and the 30 minute drive around our mountain would be a surprise. If it’s rainy here, it could be sunny there. If it’s sunny here, it could be rainy there. That’s UTAH weather for you. You just never know. It was raining when we left the house.

We had a break in the weather as we pulled into the parking lot of WHEELER HISTORIC FARM. We got unloaded and set up quickly, all our practicing came in handy. We were pretty proud of ourselves. We watched the other vendors do the same. Some decided to pitch tents outside.

This was our first big event in the SALT LAKE CITY area, MURRAY to be exact. Everyone at the FARM was so helpful, kind, and friendly. We met some amazing people, just like us, following their dreams.

The people came, the dogs came, the sheep got sheared and the entertainment played in the loft. I danced to the fiddle players and probably embarrassed Tim, but I had fun. The rain came again, the sun came out, back and forth it went all day. We learned a lot from other vendors. We watched what they did in wide-eyed wonder. WHEELER HISTORIC FARM was good to us and we can’t wait til next month to set up again, outside in the sunshine, of course.

Gathering Event Sites

April has been a wet month, but that’s okay! Lots of rain, and as they say, “April Showers Bring May Flowers.” I just love the season of Spring. My yard is a kaleidoscope of colors and the temperature is perfect. It’s not too cold, not too hot, and lots more sunshine.

I usually think about planting flowers about now, but this year I’ve decided to give herbs a chance. Since I don’t have a big yard to plant vegetables, I’ve planted my salad in pots. I have three kinds of lettuce, kale, cilantro, rosemary, oregano, spinach, two kinds of mint, (one being chocolate mint, who’s ever heard of that?) basil, lemon balm, two kinds of parsley, and lavender. I’m already harvesting and it’s been great!

We are getting ready for our first big event of the year, the FARM FEST at WHEELER HISTORIC FARM. I have a calendar of event dates for you and I hope you all can come visit us at some of them. Below are the dates.

Happy Spring!

Today is the first day of Spring! The long winter is finally past, at least that’s what the calendar says. But if you live in Utah, you probably know that we will still be getting some more snow. The earth is renewing itself, a rebirth to warmer weather and mother nature coming alive. Crocuses are blooming in my garden and buds are bursting on my gigantic willow in the front yard. The mice are scampering about and the hawks are feeding their young high up in their nests. I just bought a new pair of binoculars at the outdoor show and let me tell you, those huge birds are majestic!

The past few months kept us busy inside working on the next story in the Skip Thomas Adventures series. I in my 3rd floor office and Tim in his man cave studio downstairs. Working with a spouse can be a challenge at times. As the writer, I see things, well, as I wrote them! The illustrator sees things differently, sometimes in a different perspective. So, we compromise back and forth discussing our visions until we both agree on what should be portrayed in the book.

We’ve also been busy searching for street fairs and outdoor markets to fill our calendar. Our first outing this year will be Saturday May 18th at the 2019 Farm Fest at the Wheeler Historic Farm. Their address is 6351 South 900 East, Murray, UT 84121. The time will be 9 am - 2 pm. This is their big opening with sheering of the sheep, vendors, music, and much more great things for everyone. We are so excited to be a part of it and hope you can stop by our booth to say hello.

So, now it’s time to decorate the porch with fun things for spring. As I bring back the wicker and pillows, I anticipate my time invested in the place I most enjoy writing. I’ll admire the sparrows, quails, doves, finches, and humming birds as they flock to my feeders. I’ll drink my wine and summons my muse while I count my blessings for having had Skip Thomas in my life for me to love.

Happy Valentine's Day

February is a month full of celebrations. We have Groundhog Day, Boy Scouts Day, and Presidents’ Day. We celebrate birthdays for Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, and George Washington. And of course, the big one, Valentine’s Day.

Ah, yes, Valentine’s Day. The day we celebrate love. For me it’s a bittersweet time. You see, Skip Thomas passed away on Valentine’s Day in 2009. That’s the reason my heart is so full of joy and sadness at the same time. But, it’s also the foundation of my stories.

Skip was only 7 years old, way too young to leave us. He had a heart of gold that boy. A BIG heart full of love. And, ironically, that is what took his life. His heart kept growing and growing. There was nothing we could do to fix it. We were told large breed male dogs, no breed in particular, get this problem sometimes.

This canine stole the hearts of many. He loved children, puppies, and life itself. I made a promise to him that I would keep his memory alive. So years ago, I wrote THE ADVENTURES OF SKIP THOMAS. Now it’s an honor to share them with you, my readers.

February is also Heart Health Awareness month. Taking care of this vital organ is the key to a happy life. Eating right, exercising, getting fresh air, quality sleep and healthy loving relationships all add years for an enjoyable existence. Heart disease runs in my family. I lost my mother and others due to this disease. So, this really hits home for me. I need to be diligent in taking care of my health, and let me tell you, it’s not always easy. I can be lazy sometimes.

We want you to know that with all sales of our books, part of the proceeds are donated to animal charities and the American Heart Association. That is what Skip would want us do.

So, as he waits at the Rainbow Bridge, Skip sends his love to all of us. I hope you have a Happy Valentine’s Day by sharing your love with those that mean the most to you. Thanks for reading. Until next time, God Bless.

Happy New Year!

In the close of 2018, I reflected on the many blessings we accomplished in the start up with our new business venture, Skip Thomas Adventures. In May, we met our publisher Katie. In June, July, and August, we did layouts, re-writes, editing, and added illustrations. In September, all was sent off to the printer. In October, all the hard work we put into our dream, many years of hard work, materialized and we had our first hard copy in hand. Then came our first book launch and shows. What a whirlwind of adventures for us!

We’ve learned a lot in the past few months. And, we have a lot more to learn. I had no idea how much goes into this publishing thing, even though I’ve gotten my degrees in Art, English and Writing. I studied many years in these fields. I remember so many people telling me an Art Degree would never get me a job, that I was wasting my time and money in tuition. Same thing with a Writing Degree. And they said teachers were the only ones that used an English Degree. Well, I guess I proved them wrong!

So, as the new year progresses, we are currently working on the next book in our series. It will be called SKIP THOMAS’ FIRST HALLOWEEN and will be coming out in the fall. Also, this is the time of year we look for places to vend and sell our book. We have some things lined up and as soon as they are confirmed, we will post our calendar for you.

I hope you all have dreams to chase this year, conquer your fears and just go for it! You never know, they may just come true. Mine did. God bless, until next time…..

A Holiday Christmas Party

December 14, 2018

We had a special invite to Mid City Salon’s client appreciation Christmas Party last Thursday night in Downtown Salt Lake City, Utah. With Christmas coming around the corner fast, we thought downtown would be a festive sight. And indeed it was! All the holiday light displays were magical and hypnotizing. There’s something about the hustle and bustle of the streets that scream excitement and wide eyed wonder to me. Being a country gal, I don’t get into the city very often, but when I do it always feels like the first time.

We set up our table and mingled with the guests. What we’ve come to learn is it’s not how many books you sell or how much money you make, it’s all about sharing stories and bringing joy into someone’s life. We met so many wonderful and unique friends that night. After all, no one’s a stranger after the first hello. So we laughed and drank and shared stories.

After a while, we drove back to our small but growing town. The night was cold and the sky clear. The stars sparkled and reflected like diamonds on The Great Salt Lake as we passed by. Peace and contentment, that was our inner feelings that night. It may not have been a big sales night, but we were rich in love.

Fall Brunch & Boutique

Last weekend I had the opportunity to spend time with my friend Laurie and some other amazing talented women. They were doing a Fund Raiser for a Baby Orphanage in Tanzania and invited me help raise money for those in need. Laurie’s sister, Linda, had spent 6 months there and felt she just had to do something to help the children.

A variety of items were designed by Linda. She and her sisters have been blessed with a special gift for sewing that I sure can’t compete with. I can hardly sew a pillow case. Some of the items were aprons, tea towels, baby blankets, burp cloths, shawls, jackets, totes, swim bags, pillows, and the list goes on. Each one a beautiful piece of artwork. There was also a gorgeous quilt being auctioned off.

People came and went. We ate and drank, told stories and laughed. I saw friends I hadn’t seen in years. It felt good to be a part of it all, like a big sorority of sorts. The best part being for a good cause.

I did my part. It only took me 5 hours to pick out 2 beautiful aprons and some other things. I just hate it when there’s such a variety of nice things to choose from. I can never make up my mind, I just love everything!

Great Book Launch!

What an exciting day it was for us! The weather was gorgeous, the people were great and the launch was a success.

Thank you to all the friends who came and helped us set up and take down the event decorations, and cleaned up the clubhouse. Dawn Quintana, Kevin & Renee Christensen, Don & Natalie Kimber, and Lincoln & Amy Jolley, thank you guys we couldn’t have done it without you. Thanks to our two fabulous bartenders Jeneil Williams and Kody, sorry dude, I still don’t know your last name, shame on me! Thank you Sheena Enarson for all the delicious cookies! To Katie Mullaly, our publisher, a great BIG thank you for showing your support to your two new story tellers! We were so happy to see you there.

We saw a lot of friends and family that we hadn’t seen in a long time. And, we met new friends that came out to support us. Thank you to everyone who bought our book. We hope you are enjoying it and share it with your friends. Congrats to our give away winner Katherine Judd!

2018 October Events Schedule

This is our very first Children’s Book Launch!

October 27 (Saturday) BOOK LAUNCH 12 pm - 5 pm Stansbury Park Clubhouse - Lower Level

#1 Country Club, Stansbury Park, UT 84074 (on the shore of Stansbury Lake, directly across the street from the Golf Course)

Please come help us celebrate our first children’s book Skip Thomas Gets Adopted! There will be refreshments for kids and adults, book signings, and a gift bag drawing. We hope to see you there.

We will be in the Tanner Cabin with our new children’s book Skip Thomas Gets Adopted. Our book readings will be at 12:30 pm & 3:30 pm in the lawn area.

Come dressed in Halloween Costumes for fun and games. Visit the craft booths and food vendors for a Spooktacular Fall Event! You won’t want to miss this one.
