Literacy Month

This month has lots of things to boast about.

We are in the second week of the Christian ritual called Lent. It started on Ash Wednesday, February 26, and officially ends on Thursday, April 9, though in our house while growing up, we ended it on Easter Sunday. We were to search our minds through prayer, repent of our sins, and be thankful for what we had been given. Mom made us give up something we loved, like Girl Scout Cookies, and made sure we shared some of our belongings to the less fortunate.

Daylight savings time begins this year on the 8th, turning our clocks ahead one hour. Next comes St.Patrick’s Day on the 17th. After that, and most anticipated, is Spring on the 20th. I already have flowers popping up in my garden.

The National Education Association chose March 2 as Read Across America Day. It’s no wonder, as this is the birthday of our beloved children’s book author and illustrator Theodor Geisel, or as we all know him, Dr. Seuss! One of the greatest of all times and one of my favorites as well.

Last month I told you I was invited to speak at a literacy event. I was one of seven chosen to speak at the Northlake Elementary School in Tooele, UT.. I gave five speeches on how being an author and reading were important. I got the library, my favorite place to be! First, I told about the rich history of the town I grew up in. New Jersey being one of the original thirteen colonies, had George Washington written all over it. Someone wrote about that and now we read about it. Second, my love for reading at an early age and my education. Third and finally, how I became a writer in the here and now. Quite a process, but I won’t go into the details here. It was a great evening.

I’m going to end on something that will end up the 2020 archives one day, the Coronavirus or COVID-19. This is a very real disease. Though, by taking precautions and doing what our health departments tell us to do, most of us should be okay. The panic created by the media is terrifying, but like all things of this nature, this too shall pass. Protect yourselves at all times and if you happen to be one of the unlucky ones that have to be quarantined, pick up a book and read. Learn something new. I’m not trying to make light on the matter, but it is the month of literacy.

Until next time, God Bless, stay safe, and wash your hands!
